UK Ethnobotanist encourages your to "Grow Your Own Drugs!"

Check this guy out:

Perhaps I should be in the UK, studying at Kew, and have handsome good looks and I might have my own show! haha

It is so encouraging and so exciting to see a fellow plantsman around my age so enthusiastic and committed to his work. I totally dig his style!

An evening at the ballet and I come home with a plant!

What an awesome evening I had last week. Pacific Northwest Ballet's "Director's Choice" was performing one of my favorite pieces called "Petite Mort" by Jiri Kylian and I was given comp tickets by a new client who happens to be in the orchestra who also happens to know my former orchestra teacher who happens to be performing in the pit as well!!

So this client introduced me to Zaluzianskya capensis, a South African plant that's an annual for us. Dubbed as the "Night Phlox" or "Midnight Candy", I was captivated by the deliciously rich aroma that the small flowers possessed as we did a garden consultation by flashlight!

I has emailed to ask what the plant was initially and he offered to bring it to the show for me to try and overwinter or collect seed from it!

Here's a video of "Petite Mort" as rehearsed by PNB:

Hectic last few weeks...

Work has really been catching up to me and it often looks like I'm not getting much accomplished when one sees and visits Landwave, but a living has to be made and in my line of work, more time must be spent on landscapes that are not my very own. It's times like these where one fears of burning out, but I was reminded by my cousin that if you truly are passionate about what you do, you just naturally keep going because it's in you to do so.

The past three weeks I've had four residential landscape designs and installs, 2 ongoing maintenance clients, 3 articles to write and supply photographs for, 2 large bulb orders to sort through and pot up for spring sales, volunteer work and garden plant rescue from a garden that's being demolished, website update, and the seemingly never-ending task of putting the garden and nursery to sleep. I know I'm forgetting a few things, but this and my part time gig at the UW Botanic Gardens on the list as well, I'm just trying to hang on with a smile on my face whenever anyone sees me. hehe

It's been pretty fun and I absolutely love being productive.

Here's a photo montage of what I've been up to:

Narcissus potting Brent and Becky's Order
I've got in almost 1200 bulbs this fall and this is just one batch I've been potting up. These are plump and healthy bulbs of Narcissus canaliculatus from Van Engelen (who happens to be having a sale at this time as are Brent and Becky's Bulbs!)

Harvesting Cardiocrinum Work Party at Marian's
Gardening friend and mentor Marian Raitz kindly invited the Hardy Plant Society of Washington to DIG! Oh boy did we dig, divide and pot up the many wonderful treasures that she possessed in her amazing garden near Medina. She and her husband are moving and leaving behind a remarkable garden and collection of plants. She kindly let me harvest the massive stalks with seedheads and bulblets of the giant Himalayan lily, Cardiocrinum giganteum.

Schizostylis coccinea 'Torero' B Schizostylis coccinea 'Torero' habit
Can't resist the SEXiest flower of fall. I've been madly shopping for plants for clients and the installations I've been doing. During these ventures, I always take forever because I'm so incredibly picky about plants and I just have to see it all (even thought I don't really need it). So in a previous blog post, I mentioned caving in and purchasing a beauty I just couldn't resist. Here it is again, but now its at Landwave: Schizostylis coccinea 'Torero'

Garden visits are always great fun, but at times it feels like work because I'm constantly making a lot of mental notes about what I should be growing and propagating and constantly generating ideas for future projects. I paid the Miller Garden a visit with Matt Berberich a few weeks ago and we took in the wonderful fall color and knowledge of curator, Richie Steffen. See photos here!

This is the one plant that made me gasp. Yep, a rare double-flowered blue Gentian imported from the UK. OMFG!

Alright, fairly caught up. Time for bed, y'all!

Hmm....what could this be?

Driving around with what looks like an illegal, but potentially profitable specimen in the back seat! Alright plant geeks, what do I really have?

Halloween Highlights

I didn’t have much time to do anything too elaborate, but I was tempted to at
least carve a pumpkin! It’s been years since I’ve done it, so I thought I’d give it
a try and it turned out alright.

Even after lining the driveway with candles to encourage trick or treaters, we just had one group of neighborhood kids come by. What made my evening was this little boy who said, “I really like your garden!”

At a client’s home, he went all out to decorate his large specimen of
Edgeworthia chrysantha!
