New TV Gardening Series: "Growing A Greener World"

So, I've said it before: television is often my outlet to the world and it raised me growing up! Luckily, most of the programs I watched were on PBS. With my sentimental favorite, The Victory Garden, paving the way towards many of my horticultural interests, I'm anxious for the upcoming series called "Growing A Greener World".

I've actually met the two hosts of this series through the Garden Writer's Association so it's pretty cool to see colleagues on television. It almost feels like I'll kind of be rooting them to do well! As fellow garden communicators, we follow our hearts to share an interest, a passion and a profession we care so deeply about. We're all sort of on the same boat in a way and I sincerely hope this series takes off and we have a strong following of avid gardeners, both beginners to professionals, to encourage and inspire.

So here's a little tidbit from The Urban Sustainable Living website you can check out.

I already get the feeling that it will encompass a wide range of various topics and maybe not so much focused on plants as much as I'd like, but again, it's all about the message we're trying to get across. The main objective is to hook people in and then we can teach the specifics (ie plants, planting, design,). It's all about awareness, as well. The more people begin to realize that there are environmental impacts to a lot of what they do, the more they can feel compelled to change their ways and, perhaps, make a difference in the world.

My best to Joe and Patti! Rock it, you two!

A plug for public television

Some of you know that I did a little brand story with our local public television station, KCTS 9. I don't know if you read this post from July.

I've had a copy of the DVD for awhile, but I just now managed to format it so I could post it on the web.

Hope it gets people's attention to support quality television that raised me growing up!

TV RAISED ME: Watch PBS's "The Botany of Desire"

Check out this awesome preview that I hope everyone will watch and regain a fuller appreciation for the plants and flowers in our lives. Check out Amy Stewart in this documentary. She is the author of a book I'm currently reading called Flower Confidential .

YouTube gardening videos

While I'm recovering from this back injury, I still need to be productive somehow.

It's a goal of mine to create and post some garden videos on YouTube this season and I've been watching a few to see what's out there.

Interviews and tours of private gardens is definitely something I'd like to take on. We are blessed with numerous, outstanding gardeners who are more than willing to share the fruits of their labors and apple trees.

Here's an interview by Mike Darcy with my garden writing mentor, Lucy Hardiman, of Perennial Partners in Portland, Oregon. The advertisements in the beginning are annoying, but the interview itself was pleasant. Skip to 2:25 to watch:

Having mentioned Dan Hinkley's book launch late last month, even he's on YouTube courtesy of PBS:

There's also a lot of great "How To" videos that have been posted. Here's basic introduction to dividing dahlias:

Then there are the "How To" videos that just make me cringed because of the misleading and incorrect information they present:

I think it's good that she simplifies things for beginners to start gardening, but there's too many misleading points in her explanations. You should click on the video to view it on YouTube and read the comments posted!

Now, I just need to plan what topics I'd like to cover and start saving up for a camera!
