VANDALS!!

I'm always hoping for horticulture to make it in the mainstream media, but for some reason, when it does get mentioned or covered, it's always BAD NEWS like what happened to us at the UW Botanic Gardens's Washington Park Arboretum.

This was absolutely devastating. I got a call from David early last week and informed us of what had happened and immediately, we had a guess as to who may be responsible as right about the same time last year, we endured some vandalism and theft over at the Center for Urban Horticulture where I work part time.

  1. I'm feeling your pain... this kind of vandalism has really got to stop. Off with their heads!

  2. Glad David spoke up on our behalf. He's normally shy about being on camera.

To me, already being a field that's not often respected or recognized, incidents like this really hurt. People may ask, "What's the big deal?" and not understand that it's not just about the $43,000 of damage. There are people who may have that kind of money to throw around to just "BUY A NEW ONE", but they don't understand the work it takes (or has taken) for the plant to be in its mature state.

And for years of hard word, dedication and commitment to our collections to just be destroyed overnight... just totally blows.

  5. Wow, this is beyond sad. Somebody knows something...maybe a reward (I know more money) would get them talking?

  6. Really aggressive and violent, when you think about how much work it takes to hack down things like that. I'm skeptical about the "party favor" theory. This seems more strange than a fraternity prank, especially two years in a row at the same garden. I'd be looking at someone angry at the arboretum. Horrible and sad.

  7. So sad...to see all that time, work and money destroyed in a single evening is just awful. I hope they catch who did it...not that it will negate the damage.

  8. Truly awful. I was admiring those wine palms and monkey puzzles just a few months ago. I can't understand why anyone would mutilate them like that.
